Tony Fisher solves a Fisher Cube Puzzle

This is probably the puzzle I am most well known for. I made it in the mid eighties but I don't remember exactly which year. It's fairly easy to make though needs a bit of time to get a professional looking finish. To solve it is similar to a regular Rubik's Cube though extra processors are required to deal with the centres. This was the first puzzle I ever sold or swapped. I had been buying factory made puzzles from a few of my contacts around the world and showed it to some of them. They asked me to make it for them and I was able to swap for the puzzles I wanted. One of my contacts was Christoph Bandelow. He was very interested in my transformation and asked me to make 50 for him. He then sold them in his puzzle catalogue. He was the one who decided to call it The Fisher Cube. At the time I hated the idea and didn't think it needed a title although in correspondence I had referred to it as The Slice Cube. Naming such a simple transformation after myself seemed somewhat pretentious. It was just a puzzle I had made after all. I got used to it though and nowadays shamelessly throw my name in front of every puzzle I make. I tried a number of ways to make those originals though none were very efficient. The first few were made by cutting parts off a regular Rubik's Cube and gluing them onto an Octagonal Barrel. This was ok but it meant for each Fisher Cube I needed two puzzles plus the cutting had to be careful or parts were wasted or required lots of sanding. It was ok for ...

Over The Top - 17x17x17 - a look at the inside

Buy at www.shapeways.com Copyright (c) 2010, M. Oskar van Deventer. Over The Top is a world-record 17x17x17 Rubik's Cube. It makes quite pretty patterns. It can take many, many hours to solve. Search the internet for "17x17x17" to find more information about this unique puzzle. This video shows Oskar partly disassembling the puzzle to provide a look at the inside. The puzzle is built around a spherical core. There are 6 centers, 12 edges and 8 corners (like in a normal Rubik's Cube) with skyscraper-like structures built on them. All the other pieces hang between those skyscraper, floating over the spherical core. The long ends of these pieces are the "floating anchors" that keep the pieces straight up. Here is the link to the Guinness World Record: www.guinnessworldrecords.com Thispuzzle was 3D-printed using nylon-powder SLS technology, which explains its price. It is the very first prototype, costing its designer and maker a lot of money to create. Please do not confuse it for a cheap mass-produced puzzle.

Tony Fisher's 3x3x3 Dodecahedron Puzzle

This puzzle I made in 1995 was a stepping stone towards better things later. Because of the awkward shapes I was forced to experiment with new materials and techniques. If only I'd known about silicone rubber and polyurethane resin in those days. I'd previously used wax moulds but that was out of the question for this transformation and I think this is when I started using remeltable rubber (Gelflex). It's a truly awful stuff to work with. I used to heat it on a paraffin stove in an old sauce pan. It seemed to take ages to melt but once it did it could very easily burn. This would result in the liquid going brown and giving off loads of smoke and very unpleasant fumes. It was also sticky like treacle and would stick to and burn flesh if you got splashed by it! The puzzle has reasonable rotational movement though is very heavy since it is solid polyester resin. I used standard Rubik's Cube style stickers though the blue is textured. I used six colours, doubling up on opposite side. If I remade this today I could of course make a far better job.

LLP & John Puzzle feat Chriss-T - I miss you

Tony Fisher's UNIQUE 1 Puzzle

This was made in 2008 from a normal Rubik's Cube. Most of my puzzles are very regular with precise angles and edge positions. However I wanted this puzzle to be totally different. When I started to shape it I had no idea how it would look when finished. I didn't even know how many sides it would have. I just pretty much cut where I felt like. The only thing I had to think about was not going too deep and messing up the mechanism. It ended up with 12 completely different shaped sides. Each of which I gave a separate colour. Because of it's random shape one colour would have been enough. In fact one colour would have made it harder but I prefer the way it looks as it is. To solve, it's just like a super Rubik's Cube though because of the weird shapes you can easily lose track. See- tonyfisherpuzzles.net for photos and more information.
